Jacob Edwards Library, The Community Place
to Be
Our
History
The first
public
library was established in the Town of Southbridge by public vote in
1870. In 1872, Holmes Ammidown, Esq. established and leased
space
on Main Street for the use of the town library. Through the
generous bequest of Jacob Edwards, a new facility was erected on the
current location of the Library in 1914. Having long outgrown
its
original building, a major addition was added to the library in 1966;
this wing included the current Reading Room, Director’s Office, and the
Holmes Ammidown History Room. A major expansion and
renovation
was completed in 2000, thus increasing the library facility to its
current size of 33,000 sq. ft.
The Board of
Trustees has commissioned a book to be published which
will
detail the full history of the library and will be titled "The First Century: Jacob Edwards
Library, Southbridge, 1914-2014." Orders will be
taken and those interested will be notified when copies are available
from the printers.
On May 1st, 2014 from 4:00
- 6:00 p.m., The Board of Trustees, Staff and Friends of the Jacob
Edwards Library
invited the community to join us in celebrating 100 years of service to
patrons.
Giving Thanks
Staff Reunion Dinner
As part of
the 100th Anniversary
celebration, the Board of Trustees hosted a Giving Thanks event in the
Reading Room on Wednesday, November 19th, 2014. There was a
representation of staff from the 1960s on and trustees as far back as
the 1980s. Folks came from the Cape, the Berkshires, the 128 Corridor
and New Hampshire! It was a wonderful gathering.
